Understanding Technology Projects - Quality, Speed, and Price

Ahh technology.  How everyone loves thee.  Let me count the ways ... you can let me down.
Welcome to the latter half of 2009, where everyday computing is normalcy and not having a website is like having the swine flu.  Everyone will have the need for some type of technology project at some point in the near future, more than likely.

The Basics

The basic rule with any project has to do with its three main components.  Timeline, budget and difficulty/quality.  You can only have two of the three components in your control at any time.
Want a cheap, quality product?  You're going to be waiting a long time. (You know, that guy who promised to build you a website for free?
How about a really killer website, really quickly?  Expect to pay up to  and over 100% more for speed and quality.

Got it?

I think you see where I'm going here.  This rule is applicable across the IT services industries.  Software programs, websites, network and server support, etc.  They are all "project" based since they are contractors and that virus outbreak on your network is definitely a project.  The firewall issue you had is also a project.  Even the theme you want to design for your Wordpress site is a project.

What do I get out of it?

Now that we're clear on projects, what are you paying for?

Cheap ...

Well, typically the really cheap guys are either college students or semi-retirees who, for the most part, are not very good at being on time, quick, nor professional.  This is not to knock their technical skills, some of them are quite bright - they're just missing a certain demeanor you expect when you purchase a service.

Pricey

The really expensive guys are, generally speaking, quick at their work.  They want to get in and out because they're busy and they know the answer or know how to figure it out.  A really good tech explains things to you in laymen's terms so you can understand what was happening and what he did to remediate your problem.  Good techs are also fair with their pricing, time and warrantying their work.  When something is wrong with what they did, you should not be billed for their return to your office or home.
Of course there's all kinds and everything in between.  I know a tech that charges home and business users alike $120/hr.  He's not quick to offer alternatives that may save them money, nor is he quick to work.  And he's BUSY.  There's a TON of computers out there - and they all need our help.
