Don't Get Nickel and Dimed on Your New Website

Thinking of getting someone to create you a new website? Does your online presence not say about your company what you want it to? Do you need more functionality to your website? Well, even if you don't use Tampa Tech Solutions to create your new website, here are a few things you should know.

1. Most people advertising on Craigslist for $300 (or cheaper!) websites fall into one of two categories. Either they are just trying to nickel and dime you, or they are rank amateurs.

The "nickel and dime-rs" will get you in the door at $199 for a "basic" website. What this means is they will download a free template, stick your information into the template and you're done. This is something you could have done yourself just as easily with Website Tonight or Homestead. It may look half-decent, but for you to get the functionality or specific look you want/need, the designer is going to start charging you per image created, per revision, per hour or they may just quote you a whole new project cost that is WAY over what you were expecting.

The rank amateurs will try and get a feel for what you need, and throw something up with a half-way decent logo, OK look and feel and near zero functionality. They'll put your email address in full text on the site as a way for people to contact you (a definite NO NO) and you'll be sure to receive all kinds of spam. If you're at all serious about a real web presence and a great look and feel, these people will be sure to disappoint you.

2. Find someone with professionalism and a breadth of knowledge. Are they going to be available via phone during the design and implementation process? Do they have experience moving sites around to different hosts. Are they interested at all in learning your business to help to create a site worth using?

3. Always ask for a project price.Hourly rates are fine, but this doesn't encourage the builder to get your site done with any urgency. By creating a project based price (with defined milestones), the designer allows for a "bonus" of sorts. If they finish a site in less time than they think, there's the bonus. On the flip side, should it take longer, you're making out like a bandit. If you like the project price, just go for it. Just remember, that with project pricing comes a work scope and things that fall outside that scope will need to be paid for separately.

4. Proper scoping. It is therefore IMPERATIVE that the scope of the project is well defined before the project kicks off. This sets great expectations for the designer and the customer and should also allow for the defining of certain milestones. Those milestones can be as specific or general as you want and there can be as many or as few as you desire. Usually, four major milestones are all that is needed. There's quite a bit more you can consider, but these are the major points.
